Data controller

Data we collect

  • Newsletter address. The email address you enter to subscribe. Submitting the form opens your own mail client with a pre-filled message; no address is stored on the website itself until a subscription service is connected.
  • Messages you send. The email address and any information you choose to include when you write to us.
  • Server logs. Like most websites, the hosting server may record technical data such as IP address, browser type and time of access, for security and to keep the service running.

Purposes and legal bases

  • Sending the newsletter: your consent, given when you subscribe and withdrawable at any time.
  • Replying to your messages: our legitimate interest in answering enquiries addressed to us.
  • Security and stability of the site: our legitimate interest in protecting the service.

Recipients and processors

Your data is handled by AGI staff who need it for the purpose above, and by our technical providers (for example the hosting provider) acting on our instructions. We do not sell personal data.

Third-party content

  • Fonts. The typefaces on this site are served from our own domain. No request is made to third-party font services.
  • Map. The contact page can show a map from OpenStreetMap. It loads only after you click to load it; until then no request is sent to OpenStreetMap and your IP address is not shared.
  • Video. Some pages can embed a launch video. It loads from YouTube in privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com) only after you press play; until then no request is sent to YouTube and no cookie is set. Playing the video sends your IP address to YouTube and Google.
  • Interactive map and charts. The analysis page on US tariffs loads mapping and charting libraries (Leaflet and Chart.js) from the jsDelivr and unpkg content delivery networks, and map tiles from OpenStreetMap and CARTO. Loading these sends your IP address to those providers.

Retention

Contact emails and newsletter subscriptions are kept for a maximum of 24 months, then deleted or anonymised. Server logs are retained by the host for security.

Your rights

You may request access to your data, correction, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, or object to its processing. To exercise these rights, write to our data protection contact at contact@africagovernanceinstitute.org; you are entitled to a response within the time limits set by applicable law. You may also lodge a complaint with the Commission de protection des Données Personnelles (CDP) in Senegal (cdp.sn) or, if you are in the European Union, with your national supervisory authority, for example the CNIL in France (cnil.fr).

Cookies and local storage

This site uses no advertising or analytics cookies. It stores a single value in your browser, agi-locale, to remember your language choice. This is strictly necessary for the site to work and is not used for tracking.
